Workabout Pro

When working with the Windows platform there are a number of factors to consider.  The most important upfront consideration is whether you want to be on Windows CE or Windows Mobile.  Ryzex and Psion Teklogix can support any and all Windows requirements.

TekLogix announced recently that their 2nd Generation WORKABOUT PRO will support 3 different Windows platforms and operating systems.  Here we hope to clarify the differences between the three, and the ideal usage scenarios for each. The operating systems available on the 2nd Generation WORKABOUT PRO are:

Microsoft Windows CE 5.0. Considered the evolution from previous Windows CE versions, this operating system offers top performance and reliability for deployment of applications based on the Compact Framework 2.0, C++ or Java. It is ideally tailored for applications that require top reliability and an operating system that does not include potentially distracting features such as Personal Information Management (PIM) applications or games. Additionally, Windows CE 5.0 on the 2nd Generation WORKABOUT PRO includes a Psion Teklogix voice dialer that allows customers with GSM-enabled devices to use the devices for cellular voice as well as data communications.

Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition. This is equivalent to the Phone Edition available in previous releases of Windows Mobile (also known as Pocket PC Phone Edition). This OS edition requires that the terminal have a GSM/GPRS card for data/voice communication. Psion Teklogix will install a GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio with voice and data capabilities on devices with this edition of Windows Mobile 6. This Windows Mobile edition is ideally suited for customers interested in the standardized feature-set offered by Windows Mobile, in addition to voice/data cellular communications and Personal Information Management.

Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 Classic Edition. This is equivalent to the non-Phone Edition that previously existed on earlier Windows Mobile operating systems (also known as Pocket PC). This OS edition can be installed on terminals that either have or do not have a GSM/GPRS card. Psion Teklogix will offer an optional GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio on devices with this edition of Windows Mobile 6; however, this edition of Windows Mobile allows usage of that radio only for data communications. This Windows Mobile edition is ideally suited for customers interested in the standardized feature set offered by Windows Mobile, and who may not require cellular communications.
